Papa John's Gets Bludgeoned by Memes for Obamacare Stance

Redditors are up in arms about Papa John's CEO's stance on Obamacare and are using their favorite medium -- memes -- to express their discontent.

The backlash started on Sunday when Redditor goforReaper suggested a boycott of the pizza chain. "There are plenty of places to get cheap shitty pizza in the world. Anyone else on reddit ready to boycott Papa John's?" he asked. The suggestion netted more than 2,600 upvotes and 200-plus comments.

Not everyone is a critic. A libertarian retort ("Dear Papa John's Whiners...") got a lot of attention and a Facebook group is trying to make this Friday the National Papa John's Appreciation Day. However, the initial call for a boycott appears to have launched a groundswell of opposition against the chain. Or rather "relaunched," since Papa John's got a wave of online blowback over the summer. The initial controversy occurred after CEO John Schnatter (pictured) told Politico that Obamacare would raise the price of a pizza somewhere between $0.11 to $0.14. "We're not supportive of Obamacare, like most businesses in our industry."

After President Obama's reelection last week, Schnatter doubled down on those comments, claiming that the Affordable Care Act will cost his company $5 million to $8 million a year. Some critics are taking issue with the claim and pointing out that the chain gave away 2 million free pizzas last year during the NFL season as part of a customer loyalty program.

Though there was a lot of worthwhile discussion on the various Reddit threads, perhaps the most effective protest came through memes. Here are some of the best:
